Hidden in the dramatic mountains of Hubei Province, Enshi is a breathtaking destination that feels a world away from China's mega-cities. However, "hidden" doesn't mean "inaccessible."
Thanks to China's incredible high-speed rail network, visiting Enshi is easier than you might think. Whether you are coming from Chongqing, Shanghai, or Beijing, here is your ultimate, step-by-step guide to reaching the "Avatar Mountains" of Hubei.
🚄 The Best Way: High-Speed Train (Bullet Train)
We highly recommend taking the high-speed train (known as Gaotie/高铁 in China). It is fast, incredibly punctual, exceptionally clean, and offers scenic views of the countryside.
Enshi has one primary high-speed rail station: Enshi Railway Station (恩施站 - Enshi Zhan).
Here is how long it takes from popular gateway cities:
- Chongqing to Enshi: This is the most popular route for international travelers. It takes only 1.5 to 2.5 hours by bullet train. If you are exploring Western China, pairing Chongqing with Enshi makes perfect sense.
- Wuhan to Enshi: Around 2.5 to 3 hours. Wuhan is the capital of Hubei Province and an excellent transit hub.
- Shanghai to Enshi: Around 10 to 11 hours. While it's a longer ride, daytime bullet trains are surprisingly comfortable.
- Beijing to Enshi: Around 9 to 10 hours by high-speed train.
How to Buy Train Tickets in China (For Foreigners)
Do not plan on buying tickets at the train station on your travel day. Tickets on popular routes sell out days in advance.
For international guests, the easiest and most reliable way to book is via the Trip.com app (the international version of Ctrip).
Follow these steps:
- Download the Trip.com app and create an account.
- Switch to the "Trains" tab and select "China Continental".
- Enter your departure city and "Enshi" as your destination.
- Book your ticket using your physical Passport data. Make sure your name matches your passport exactly (including middle names).
- No Paper Ticket Needed: At the train station, you simply scan the photo page of your passport at the automated gates. The gate will read your passport electronically and let you through.
✈️ Option 2: Flying to Enshi
If you are short on time and traveling from far away (like Beijing or Guangzhou), flying might be a better option.
Enshi has a small, domestic commercial airport: Enshi Xujiaping Airport (ENH).
- Direct Flights: You can catch direct flights to Enshi from cities like Wuhan, Beijing, Guangzhou, and Hangzhou.
- Flight Booking: Similar to train tickets, you can easily book these domestic flights on Trip.com.
Note: Enshi Airport is very close to the downtown area (only a 15-minute drive), making it extremely convenient upon arrival.
🚙 The Final Mile: You Arrived in Enshi. Now What?
Congratulations, you made it to Enshi! But here is where the real challenge begins.
Unlike major metropolitan cities with extensive subway systems, public transportation in Enshi is mostly limited to city buses that do not reach the scenic mountain attractions (like the Enshi Grand Canyon or Pingshan Canyon), which are often 2 to 3 hours driving away from the train station.
Taxis are available, but almost zero taxi drivers in the region speak English, and negotiating long-distance fares can lead to misunderstandings.
💡 The Seamless Solution: Book a Private Driver Pickup
Skip the confusing taxi line. Enshi Escape offers direct pickup services specifically for international travelers.
Imagine stepping off your high-speed train and finding a professional, courteous driver waiting for you, ready to whisk you away to your hotel or directly to the mountains in a clean, modern vehicle.
